Awarm welcome to the winter edition of the European Ophthalmic Review. This issue features two papers exploring corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL), in particular, the modifications to the original ‘Dresden protocol’. The two main modifications are transepithelial (epi-on) CXL and accelerated CXL, which seem to rely on a final common pathway that determines efficacy, i.e. oxygen dependency. We are also pleased to include reportage of two symposia held at the European Society of Ophthalmology Congress – on the changing paradigms of treating severe keratitis in dry eye disease and an update on glaucoma treatment.

Paediatric refractive surgery is a controversial area and a useful summary of the evidence from studies published between 1990 and 2015 is presented. There is a consensus that refractive surgery may be an option for children with refractive amblyopia after the various medical therapies have been exhausted.

Angioplex optical coherence tomography is a new approach to diagnostic imaging in retinal disease that may well become a standard initial examination step. It may also indicate whether further investigations, such as fluorescein angiography or indocyanine green, are required. Included in the range of retinal topics covered is an editorial discussing common treatment regimens in neovascular age-related macular degeneration. A pragmatic three-step treatment model is proposed.

European Ophthalmic Review would like to take this opportunity to thank all participants on this edition. A special thanks goes to our editorial board for their continuing support and invaluable guidance and the biggest thanks are reserved for the expert authors, who spared precious time and effort to produce an interesting selection of articles. We hope you find the selection of articles in this edition stimulating and, as ever, we welcome feedback on any of the papers.
