Filmed as a highlight of Hawaiian Eye and Retina 2023.

What have been your highlights of Hawaiian Eye and Retina 2023? (0:20)

There were many highlights of Hawaiian Eye 2023. My favorite day is the Monday session where we see some of the most complicated cataract surgeries. There are a number of cases where we were able to learn new techniques and being able to see some complications and how you work your way out of it. That’s always my favorite part of the week. The second part is the introduction of some of the newer intraocular lenses, which I will speak about shortly.

What have been the most exciting developments in intraocular lenses in recent years? (0:55)

To me, there have been two intraocular lenses that have really excited me since coming out or getting approved in recent years. The first one is the light adjustable lens, which I will speak about shortly. And the second one is the Apthera(TM) intraocular lens, which is a lens that has a ring in the center to create a small aperture view, sort of like a pinhole effect. Both of these lenses are really, really exciting because they give you the opportunity to treat patients with a premium lens that may have a somewhat compromised cornea. And this gives you the opportunity to allow them a greater range of vision and sort of a premium experience in an eye that may not have been a candidate previously.
