Keratoconus is characterized by the thinning of the cornea and irregularities of the cornea’s surface. In this touchOPHTHALMOLOGY interview with Dr Ana Mercedes García-Albisua (Hospital “Luis Sánchez Bulnes”, México City, México), a variation of the original manual Bowman layer transplantation technique is described. After the isolation of the graft, a stromal pocket is created using a femtosecond laser. With the use of this technology, which entails preservation of the conjunctiva and the non-use of sutures, the scleral approach is avoided.

The presentation entitled ‘Bowman Layer Transplantation Using a Femtosecond Laser: 3 Years Results’ was presented at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, April 22-26, 2022

Questions:

  1. Could you give us a brief overview of Bowman layer transplantation using a femtosecond laser?
  2. What are the benefits of Bowman layer transplantation compared with other treatments for keratoconus?

Disclosures: Ana Mercedes García-Albisua has nothing to disclose in relation to this video.

Support: Interview and filming supported by Touch Medical Media Ltd. Interview conducted by Shanice Allen.

Filmed in coverage of the virtual ASCRS 2022.
