World Glaucoma Week 2026 (8–14 March) is a global initiative led by the World Glaucoma Association to raise awareness of glaucoma, which is a the leading causes of irreversible blindness worldwide, and to encourage early detection through regular eye examinations. As glaucoma often develops without noticeable symptoms in its early stages, raising awareness and promoting regular screening amongst the general public remains essential steps in preventing avoidable vision loss.
This year’s theme, “Uniting for a Glaucoma-Free World” highlights the importance of collaboration between clinicians, researchers, patient organisations and healthcare systems to improve diagnosis, expand access to care and optimise long-term disease management.
Our touchOPHTHALMOLOGY Future Leaders 2026 winners were announced this campaign, celebrating emerging clinicians and researchers who are helping to shape the future of ophthalmology, including rising stars working in glaucoma research and innovation.
One of our Future Leaders in glaucoma, Alessandro Rabiolo discusses the growing role of advanced data science in ophthalmology, noting that “large datasets and bioinformatics will help personalise glaucoma care and improve how we understand disease progression.”
Meanwhile, Sahil Thakur emphasises the importance of translating clinical insight into practical innovation, explaining that “clinicians are uniquely positioned to identify unmet needs and drive technologies that improve patient care.”
Together, these perspectives highlight a broader shift in glaucoma research towards integrating clinical expertise, digital innovation and collaborative research to improve early detection, refine treatment strategies and ultimately prevent avoidable vision loss.
