In this letter, Mr Wagih Aclimandos, President of the European Society of Ophthalmology (SOE) and Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon and Lead Clinician for Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Services at King’s College Hospital, London, shares his insights and highlights of what delegates can look forward to at the upcoming SOE meeting talking place in Lisbon, Portugal from 7–9th June 2025.
Dear Colleagues,
It is my privilege to invite you to join friends and colleagues from the world of Ophthalmology who will get together in Lisbon from 7th – 9th June 2025. We held a fantastic SOE Congress in Prague in 2023 after nearly four years of lockdown. We anticipate another great and well attended Congress in the idyllic surroundings of Lisbon.
I encourage you to look up on line the outstanding program that awaits us at https://soe2025.soevision.org/scientific-programme-sessions/
We are delighted that the International Society of Ocular Trauma (ISOT) will be joining us and making a significant contribution.
The Keynote Speakers of the named Lectures are international summities in their respective fields. Professor Sir Peng Khaw, from UCL and Moorfields will deliver the Theodor Axenfeld Lecture. Professor Filomena Ribeiro, Head of the department of Ophthalmology at Hospital Da Luz in Lisbon, will deliver the Jose Barraquer Lecture and Dr Gordon Plant who has for decades been in charge of the Neuroophthalmology services at St Thomas Hospital, The National Hospital for Nervous Diseases and Moorfields in London, will give the Marcus Gunn Lecture.
We shall have top speakers in every Subspeciality allowing us to learn about updates and recent developments in each. Several presentations will look at the interaction of AI with Medicine in general and Ophthalmology in particular.
The YO-SOE will be welcoming Junior Ophthalmologists into their Lounge and have planned four excellent Symposia open to all.
You will have the opportunity to attend Wet Labs and Suturing courses.
Needless to say that the SOE 2025 Congress is a great opportunity to network and have face to face debates and discussions with colleagues from all over the world. Delegates from 89 Countries, from across every continent, attended the Congress in Prague and we anticipate that at least the same will be the case in Lisbon.
Looking forward to seeing you in Lisbon
Wagih Aclimandos
President of the European Society of Ophthalmology
