Corneal ectatic disorders, such as keratoconus, progressively weaken corneal integrity, leading to thinning, irregular astigmatism and visual deterioration.1 Typically progressive in nature, these ectasias result in increasingly thinner corneas, causing the cornea to protrude forward into a cone shape. This leads to increasing amounts of myopia and astigmatism – both regular and irregular – as the disease […]

As the world marked 75 years since the first intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in November 2024, the World Society of Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (WSPOS) launched an important initiative to reflect on how far we’ve come and how much we still need to learn, especially in the paediatric space.

While IOL technology has advanced significantly, there is still no global consensus on best practices for paediatric implantation. Clinical decisions vary widely based on age, laterality, surgical approach, available resources, and follow-up capability. This variability makes it difficult to benchmark outcomes or standardise care.

That’s why WSPOS is conducting what we hope will be the largest-ever international survey on paediatric IOL implantation.

Why this survey matters

Our goal is to:

  1. Capture a global snapshot of current practice patterns
  2. Identify gaps and challenges in access, training and outcomes
  3. Inform future educational content, guidelines and discussions
  4. Contribute to a peer-reviewed publication and a dedicated webinar to share the findings

The survey is open to all clinicians who are involved in the decision-making or surgical care of children undergoing IOL implantation. We know this is a niche area, which makes your contribution or your help sharing this with others who implant paediatric IOLs especially valuable.

Still time to participate

📝 The survey remains open, and we strongly encourage all qualified professionals to take part. It only takes a few minutes, and your insights will help build a truly global understanding of paediatric IOL use.

🎉 Plus, all completed survey entries will be entered into a draw to win one of 5 free registrations to WCPOS VI in 2027 a small thank you for supporting this important effort.
