The International Congenital Corneal Opacification Network (ICCON) is a pioneering initiative dedicated to improving the care and management of children with congenital corneal opacities worldwide. Established by the World Society of Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (WSPOS) in collaboration with the Paediatric Keratoplasty Association (PKA), ICCON aims to connect specialists, surgeons, and healthcare professionals with a shared mission: ensuring that children with these rare yet challenging conditions receive the expertise and treatment they need.
The Birth of ICCON
ICCON was first conceptualised during a Focus Group Meeting at WCPOS V, 2024, where 50 experts from around the world participated both in-person and virtually. This discussion laid the foundation for a global network of ophthalmologists and surgeons who are willing to advise, manage, and operate on children with congenital corneal opacities.
Why ICCON Matters
Congenital corneal opacities present unique challenges, requiring highly specialised care. However, access to expertise varies significantly across regions. ICCON will act as a hub for collaboration, allowing specialists to exchange knowledge, guide treatment approaches, and ultimately enhance patient outcomes worldwide.

To mark its official launch, ICCON will be introduced at the IX World Cornea Congress in Washington, DC. This milestone event will provide an opportunity for professionals in the field to learn more, get involved, and contribute to shaping the network’s future.
