Q: What is the optimal procedure for pre- and intraoperative imaging of the eye during toric IOL implantation? Toric IOLs have perhaps enjoyed the greatest reproducible success of any premium lens type in use over the past decade. However, their success depends greatly on accurate placement, and this requires some effort on the part of […]
Q: What is the role of cerebrospinal fluid pressure in the pathogenesis of glaucoma? Glaucoma has classically been thought of as a one-pressure disease, with the only modifiable risk factor being intraocular pressure (IOP). However, increasing experimental and clinical evidence suggests that CSFp may be just as important. In retrospective studies on patients having undergone […]
Despite the successful translation of corneal cross-linking (CXL) into clinical practice for the therapy of progressive ectasia, keratoconus globally still remains a major reason for severe visual impairment in the young population. Keratoconus is characterized by a biomechanical weakening effect on the corneal stroma. This disease is typically most aggressive in the first three decades […]
Over the last two decades, deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) has re-emerged as a procedure of choice, for patients with corneal stromal disease, requiring corneal transplantation. Despite the fact that there are distinct advantages of DALK over penetrating keratoplasty (PK), the uptake of the procedure worldwide, has been very variable. The advantages of DALK include […]
Harvard Business School professor Clayton Christensen popularized the concept of disruptive innovation to explain why the most successful companies eventually fail. While the leading companies continue to develop better and more expensive technology, they fail to anticipate a sea change in the way new technology will be used and incorporated into their business or field—the […]
Through the centuries, ceaseless innovation has advanced cataract surgery – the most frequently performed operation on earth – from Daviel’s lens extraction, to Ridley’s intraocular lens (IOL) implantation, to Kelman’s phacoemulsification, and now to femtosecond laser assisted techniques.1 Femtosecond laser surgery represents the marriage of two technologies: ocular imaging and laser photolysis. Most lasers depend […]
The optic nerve head (ONH) is the region where retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) leave the eyeball via the scleral canal. It also consists of blood vessels, glial, and connective tissue. Glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy characterized by the loss of retinal nerve fibres and the axons of RGCs at the level of the ONH. […]
Ocular rosacea is a chronic inflammatory disorder which may present in various manifestations such as chronic blepharoconjunctivitis, meibomian gland dysfunction, corneal vascularization, infiltration, scarring and, albeit rarely, even perforation. In nearly half to two thirds of cases it has been reported to occur in association with acne rosacea, a disease characterized by transient or persistent […]
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the third leading cause of blindness worldwide and the primary leading cause of vision loss in the Western world. Its prevalence is expected to increase as a consequence of an aging population, such that it is estimated that close to 288 million people will be affected by AMD by 2040.1 […]
