Welcome to the latest edition of European Ophthalmic Review. In our ageing population, preserving and/or restoring good quality vision is a major challenge. This issue of the journal features a wide range of articles reflecting the rapid pace at which the ophthalmologic community are addressing this challenge.
Our expert interviews have become a popular feature of our journals and this issue features three interviews with key opinion leaders who explore keratoplasty, diabetic macular oedema and choroidal neovascularisation. Dan Reinstein provides Practice Pearls on small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) as another option in the treatment of refractive error, with fewer complications and better outcomes. Finally, in our review and original research sections our authors explore insights into cataract surgery, Trabectome® surgery for glaucoma, imaging in retinal disease and the impact of dry eye disease on mental health.
We hope you enjoy this edition, which will be distributed at the upcoming ESCRS/EURETINA meeting – don’t forget to pick up your free copy!
We continue to accept submissions for our Winter issue, and we welcome you to submit your manuscript here.
Many thanks, and enjoy!

Q. Could you tell us a little about the microbubble technique in keratoplasty? The microbubble incision technique is a new surgical method which exploits the presence of small air bubbles in the premembrane layers. This removes deep stroma to reach Descemet membrane by means of manual layer-by-layer dissection. This technique is particularly useful in case […]
Q. What is currently known about biomarkers of choroidal neovascularisation? The intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) approach has proven to be effective in the treatment of CNV and diabetic macular oedema. Many treatment regimens have been proposed to make the clinical application easier. Nevertheless, there is an immense difference between randomised clinical trials and […]
Q. How prevalent is chronic persistent diabetic macular oedema following anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) treatment? To determine the prevalence of chronic persistent diabetic macular oedema (cpDMO), one must first define what is meant by cpDMO. In a post hoc exploratory analysis by the Diabetic Retinopathy Clinical Research Network (DRCR.net), authors defined persistent DMO (pDMO) […]
Small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) has been gaining major traction since it was fully commercialised in 2012, with more than 1.3 million procedures performed to date worldwide. Our first SMILE experiences began in 2010 during its development and since 2012 we have offered this routinely to our patients. On completion of our first 4,000 SMILE […]
Fuchs endothelial dystrophy (FED) is a corneal endothelial disease characterised clinically by corneal endothelial dysfunction and guttae excrescences on the posterior corneal surface. The guttae excrescences represent foci of thickened posterior collagenous layers. The demise of healthy corneal endothelial cells (CECs) in FED leads to impairment of the endothelial pump mechanism, resulting in the progressive […]
Cataract is the most common cause of blindness (accounting for 51% of blindness) and cataract surgery involving removal of fogged lenses and replacement with synthetic intraocular lenses is one of the most common surgical procedures performed worldwide.1,2 This intervention is hugely important in tackling otherwise increasing levels of vision loss or poor vision quality resulting […]
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a chronic, progressive degenerative disease with subsequent reduction in visual acuity. The disease is the foremost cause of visual impairment in the elderly.1,2 The most recent data from Europe indicate that the prevalence of AMD may be decreasing, despite the increase in life expectancy and projected increases, which may be […]
Inherited retinal dystrophies (IRD) are genetic disorders characterised by variable, albeit progressive degeneration of the retina, retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and choriocapillaris (CC).1,2 Prevalence varies in different countries, affecting approximately 1 in 4,000 individuals, with symptoms including poor peripheral or night vision, metamorphopsias, reduced central vision or blindness.1,3 Their pattern of inheritance may be autosomal […]
Trabecular bypass with the Trabectome® device (NeoMedix, Tustin, CA, US) has been gaining adoption worldwide since its introduction as a micro-incision glaucoma surgery (MIGS) option for many differing types of glaucoma. As with any new surgical procedure, surgeons rely on published data to guide their decision making and patient-selection criteria until they gain adequate individual […]
Twenty-five percent of patients who visit ophthalmic clinics report symptoms of dry eye and it is one of the most common conditions seen by eye care practitioners.1 Approximately two-thirds of patients affected by dry eye disease (DED) are female and elderly,2,3 and there is a higher risk in postmenopausal women.4 The occurrence of severe forms […]
It is well known that blindness can occur after laparoscopic surgery as a result of severe head-down tilt for >6–7 hours. Among possible causes, a relationship between intraocular pressure (IOP) and optic nerve damage has been suggested.1 We previously described that IOP, detected by the Icare® Pro® Tonometer (Icare, Vantaa, Finland), may rise after pneumoperitoneum […]
