We are sorry to announce the death of one of our valued board members, Professor Emilio Campos. Professor Campos was born in Trieste, Italy. His father had been professor of ophthalmology in Naples, but was forced by Mussolini’s anti-Jewish laws to flee to Geneva.
Professor Campos trained in Modena, Italy with Professor Bruno Bagolini, with whom he published several highly esteemed papers on the subject of strabismus. He then spent time in Tübingen, Germany and Gainesville, FL, USA. He returned to Modena in 1979, and in 1995 he moved to the University of Bologna as Professor and Chief of Ophthalmology. He believed that the university represented part of his family, and had an unlimited loyalty and commitment to it. He became an internationally renowned expert and leader in ophthalmology, particularly in the field of strabismus. As the Deputy Vice President of the Italian Ophthalmological Society, he was considered one of the most significant figures in the history of the society, and he was expected to become the president of the society in 2022.
He was widely respected and liked for his warmth, humour, sensitivity and cheerful disposition. He will be greatly missed. Our condolences go to his family and friends.
