Welcome to the latest edition of US Ophthalmic Review<\/i>, which features a wide range of articles that have been
\nchosen for their assessment of current practices and research that directly affect ophthalmologists and other
\npractitioners involved in the care of patients with ophthalmic disease.<\/p>\n
Our expert interviews have become a popular feature of the journal, and this issue features four interviews. Cynthia Matossian,
\nrecent winner of the OWL Visionary Award, shares her expertise in leadership in ophthalmology. Deepinder Dhaliwal discusses
\nthe challenges of refractive lens exchange and other aspects of refractive surgery. Bennie Jeng discusses a number of
\naspects of inflammatory conditions of the eye. Finally, Jennifer Loh discusses recent advances and current controversies in
\nphacoemulsification technology.<\/p>\n
While outcomes have improved in cataract surgery, difficult cases continue to challenge cataract surgeons. Xie and Farid
\ndiscuss the use of femtosecond laser technology in the surgical management of white cataracts; Lee shares some practice
\npearls for avoiding intraoperative floppy iris syndrome during cataract surgery; and I describe the role of active fluidics and
\ntorsional ultrasound in providing a stable cataract surgery environment.<\/p>\n
Microinvasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) is one of the hottest topics in ophthalmology. In a review article, Vera et al. propose a
\nprotocol for the management of patients receiving a gel stent implant, one of the latest MIGS devices.<\/p>\n
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) continues to be at the forefront of ophthalmologic research. Koreishi et al. review
\nclinical trial data as well as their own experience of the implantable miniature telescope, the first approved surgical treatment
\nfor visually impaired people with bilateral central vision loss due to end-stage AMD.<\/p>\n
Also in this edition, Turgut et al. describe key diagnostic features for choroidal malignant melanoma and choroidal nevus;
\nShehadeh et al. present a case report of keratoconus in a 4-year-old girl that illustrates the importance of early screening for
\nall children of a family history of keratoconus. Finally, Thornton discusses the discovery of gene mutations caused by naturally
\noccurring opioids that may lead to hereditary ophthalmic syndromes and other chronic diseases.<\/p>\n
